For Wildlife Enthusiasts the following are well worth a visit:
- Hornsea Mere which is the biggest inland freshwater lake in Yorkshire,
- Spurn point Nature Reserve,
- RSPB Bempton Cliffs on Flamborough Head (lots of Puffins visible nesting from April to July).
In addition, dolphins and seals are regularly sighted in Bridlington Bay. Boat trips from Bridlington Harbour may give you a chance of seeing them close up.
The nearest beach to the cottage is at Mappleton, a 10 minute drive away. In high season it may be difficult to park here as the free car park only takes about 10 cars. Hornsea and Withernsea both have very good family friendly beaches. From May to September many of the beaches do not allow dogs, but the excellent beach at Fraisthorpe, just south of Bridlington allows dogs all year round, has good parking (you need to buy a parking ticket on site) and has a great cafe called The Cow Shed.
Young children: Hornsea with its seaside attractions and play areas is only 5 miles away. There is also a bug zoo at Hornsea Freeport. The Freeport also links to Hornsea Rail Trail an excellent path/cycle path, which you can also access a mile from the cottage at the point where it crosses the Beverley Road near Whitedale Farm Shop. There is a small car park here.
Beverley Racecourse and its surrounding heathland offers excellent dog walking opportunities, which you can combine with a shopping trip to the lovely independent shops in the delightful town of Beverley .
Burton Constable Hall is only a 10 minute drive from Withernwick and is well worth a visit. It also has large grounds where you can walk several miles with your dog.
